Errors & Warnings
The following paragraphs explain error messages and warnings included
in your Link Check report.
Access denied for robots:
Our robot was unable to test this link because the site denies access
to robots. If you are the site's Webmaster and want us to test it, you
should edit the "robots.txt" file and allow access to robots.
Password required:
The URL requires a password for read access. If you own the
site and want us to test it, you should temporarily remove password
protections.
File not found:
The URL could not be found. This could be due to a badly
formed URL in your file, or to the target file having moved on its
server.
No response from host:
No answer was received from the host within our timeout period.
The target host could be down temporarily, or heavy network traffic
could be interfering with our testing. In most cases this error
indicates a temporary problem and does not necessarily mean that
the link is bad. We recommend that you retest the affected URLs
at a later time.
Encountered server error:
The server hosting the URL reported an error. This can
mean that the server is misconfigured. This problem will likely be
persistent, and indicates that the link is bad.
No such domain name:
The domain name of the URL was not found in the DNS database. This
could mean that the domain name you entered is incorrect. However,
this problem can also occur during periods of very heavy network
traffic which prevents a response from the DNS server. In addition, domain names for new Web sites may take several days to circulate
through the DNS system. We recommend
you check your URL and possibly retest it at a later time. In addition,
you can submit your job using the IP address of your domain.
Not checked:
The URL was not checked by our robot for some reason. The most common
cause of this message is the limits we place on the number of links
and pages tested by our robot. If a link involves server redirection,
our robot will treat the redirect target as a separate Web page. If the
robot is testing a large site and is close to reaching the size
limit, the new page may be over the limit. Server redirection is
common on the Web. For example, a link to http://www.domain.com will
usually trigger a redirect to http://www.domain.com/.
Not HTTP link: This indicates that the target
of the link is a CGI script. Since we currently do not process CGI scripts
this link was not tested. You will only see this message if the script is
the target of a server redirect. For example, you will get this message if
you have a link
"http://www.domain.com" which causes a server redirect to the CGI script
"http://www.domain.com/cgi-bin/script.pl".
Bad relative path: This error indicates that the URL includes one or more "up" indicators
("../") in its path which would carry it above the domain name. For
example, if the file "http://www.mydomain.com/file.htm" includes a link
to href="../another_file.htm", this would carry it beyond the level
of the domain. Some browsers account for this condition and will
modify the URL; others do not.
URL too long:
This URL exceeded our maximum character limit.
Remote Link:
This indicates that the link was outside the scope of your test. For
example, if you configured your job to check only local links and
the link in question leads outside your site, you may see this message.
